If you have children do not enroll them in PG public school. Send them to a private school.
Before writing off PGCPS entirely, take time to actually look at the schools and meet the principal. There are a lot of good teachers and school communities in the county.

I concur. PGCPS is not a system I would recommend to any parent looking to place a child. The system was abysmal 30 years ago when I attended it. The system has only gotten worse.

UTC (University Town Center) still has condos available starting at 138k for a one bedroom. Pretty handy location with food, shopping (such that it is), post office, medical/dental center and entertainment right on site, and all this located across the street from the Metro. Smallest units measure 600+ sq feet. with these amenities, if these condos were IN DC, they would cost 350k at a minimum. So they really are a deal. But as you see, double the price point you were looking for. That said, there are condos in that price range in Hyattsville area. Not modern, not posh but condos. Not personally familiar with owner ratios in these cheapy condo buildings, so financing may prove difficult (which might also explains the low prices).

aren't those condos in UTC the ones with crazy high condo fees (like $500+/month)?

a good principle?????

look, you don't want your kids falling behind. In PG they most likely will. Also there are plenty of ghetto kids who can make your childs life hell. No to PG county schools. They don't care enough about your child to fix the problems so screw em. let em teach to nobody. It's their own fault. This is a huge factor when deciding on a home in PG. If you want your kid to get the most out of his education then PG schools are not an option.

The original poster was looking for a studio or 1-bedroom, so I don't think she has a school age child. This discussion of schools really belongs in a different thread.

First, it is "principal." Don't criticize the quality of a school district and then not spell or punctuate properly.

One of my children is enrolled in a Prince George's County public school. The quality is good, and she is not falling behind. She does not attend school with "plenty of ghetto kids." She and her schoolmates are not living a hellish academic existence. That school is not the only one that is successful in the county.

Not every thread here is a forum for folks to rant about the schools. In fact, the OP didn't ask about schools. Hint, hint, hint.

Perhaps a one bedroom is all the person feels they can afford with a child. Your inference is premature.

There are some condos right on Chillum Rd. in Hyattsville. I believe they are called Fairmount condos that might be for sale. A lot of them, within the last several years, have sold for under $100K. They are located literally right around the corner from the DC line
