I am pursuing a job transfer to our Greenbelt office and I am looking for a few recommendations on decent cities with a not so horrendous commute to work, which will be during regular business hours. I work in a government job and am currently stationed in Orlando, Florida. My wife and I are in our late 20s with no children, but we do have a large dog that is not a restricted breed type. We currently rent a three bedroom house with a large fenced in back yard in a nice Orlando suburb for $1350 per month. We would be happy with a 2 bedroom rental home. I do realize that rent and the overall cost of living will be higher in MD, but we would like to be closer to family, so this would be a good move for us. My normal commute to work is about 30-35 minutes but it is all toll highways. We have been reading up on areas in Howard and Montgomery Counties, namely Elkridge, Ellicott City, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville. Any help and feedback is greatly appreciated.

These areas make sense when you want a good school system for kids. Since you don't have kids, why not make your live easier, and live close to work? You can find decent rentals in Greenbelt, Beltsville, Calverton, Laurel, Bowie and College Park. The hardest part will be finding a place that accepts your dog. You can expect to pay $1500-1900 for a small house.

In addition to some of those, I'd suggest taking a look at Berwyn Heights and Hyattsville ...
