It's a tad further out than I originally wanted to go, but the walkability around the apartment is hard to beat. Strathmore or Whiteflint would be really convenient to commute to work, but I'd have to drive everywhere. At least with Rockville I can walk or drive, depending on what I need.
I agree. There are so many new restaurants, shops and even a movie theater within the Rockville Town Center area, you'll probably never need to leave it. Parts of the White Flint area are OK for walking, but not as convenient as Rockville, and the Grosvenor/Strathmore area is definitely not walkable to anything. The other nice thing about Rockville is that Amtrak stops there as well, so if you're into taking the train for out of town trips, you can walk to the station.

As far as I can see, the only tangible downside is that you can't take every metro train home during rush hour, since every alternate train (I believe) terminates at Grosvenor, but I'd say that's minor - especially if you time your trains correctly.

Yup...Rockville...go for it.

Just curious to know if you guys would all still choose Rockville if the Purple light rail line were open and operating which would give a direct rail route between Silver Spring and Bethesda.

Good question. I'm not sure I like Silver Spring anyway, even with all the gentrification, so that might influence me.

"There is nothing Silver Spring has to offer that trumps Rockville besides being closer to DC. Rockville has better food and shopping options. It also has less crime."

WHAT??? This is the nuttiest thing I've ever read on city-data, and there's some really nutty stuff on here. Any single block of downtown Silver Spring has more to offer then the entirety of Rockville x10 as far as dining/entertainment. The nicest place in Rockville is a freakin Gordon Biersch, which tells you all you need to know about Rockville (I say this as an RHS graduate).

Anyways, if you're simply talking about commute via public transportation then Redlining it from Rockville probably makes sense. If you're driving then Silver Spring probably wins (E-W sucks, but Rockville Pike is the worst). If you're talking about actually doing stuff with your life then downtown Silver Spring destroys Rockville (again, I've lived in both) or North Bethesda, which is still about 10-20 years away from being something substantial. You're right that downtown Silver Spring has gotten expensive; personally, I can recommend Silver Spring Towers as a relatively inexpensive option right in downtown. Great location and great staff - would still be living there if I didn't purchase a condo.

Good luck!

Well, I moved into a 1 BR condo in Rockville. Really close to the metro and town center, which is nice, and for rent more than $100 cheaper than anything similar I could find in Silver Spring.

I checked out Bob's Shanghai 66. I highly recommend! Excellent xiao long bao (soup dumplings).

Lol you're right, but if you're willing to drive then Rockville compares more favorably. Lots of hole-in-the-wall type restaurants along the pike. Silver Spring definitely has more options in walking distance.

Thanks for the advice. I like downtown Silver Spring a lot but the deal I got (and red line commute) was too good to pass on.

Congratulations! I live in Rockville as well and I love it here. My boyfriend and I go to Rockville Town Center restaurants all the time. I also prefer Rockville to Silver Spring so you're not alone on that one. Welcome!

Rockville is great. I love the Town Square as well. You can still buy a relatively affordable older house in Rockville (and Silver Spring). Silver Spring has a lot going for it as well, like the Fillmore.

I currently reside in Rockville (right next to the twinbrook metro) and let's just say that I am looking forward to relocating to downtown Silver Spring in the very near future, once my lease ends. Downtown Silver Spring is a great place for those who enjoy living in a diverse, eclectic area w/ plenty of amenities in a very walkable community. Rockville is more or less a sleepy suburb, with far less walkability (and diversity).

Also, parts of Rockville look a bit rundown and not very well developed.
