True. That's how we described a bamma back in the day.

So glad that I grew up in Uptown (3500 all day), Uptown make it and the rest of y'all bammas take it.
DC Bound Im not sure what bad experiences you had with Prince Georges and Charles County but they are just fine with me. For those who continually complain about those areas as too black, too country, and too ghetto please just stay where you feel more comfortable. Everyone has a choice but calling others derogatory names only makes you look like the ignorant one.

Have a great day in your great Uptown neighborhood where they keep it real...smh.

Growing up in 1970s DC and taking full advantage of wonderful public school system, I heard Bamma nearly every day- not directed at me mind you.

I finally asked about it and the most common answer was "a person who wears mismatched clothes" and is "clueless."

I gradually realized it is the African-American term for Country Bumpkin or Hillbilly. I always refer people to the scene in Malcolm X where the fancy Harlem guy dresses the then Malcolm Little down for his unstylish dress and ignorant mannerisms.

In any case, it is a great term and I used to employ it myself here and there. Still can't watch a Crimson Tide game without laughing a bit.

Yes, I heard that too, about the mismatched clothes. Did you also hear the term, "homey," which meant a plain or lame style of dress, hair style or overall appearance?

I may have, but cannot specifically recollect that one.

I could care less what you look like, but your thinking, behavior and consciousness is what I'm concerned about.

And, for all you folks who don't think the state of Maryland is somewhat backwards and bammish, you're either in denial or lying to yourself.
