What's your budget?
That is really going to be the deciding factor, wants versus wallet. When people ask for advice on moving to an exciting or vibrant or safe spot in MoCo the tendency is to recommend the most expensive or upscale places chock full amenities in the county that truthfully only a small fraction of residents can afford. Several hundred thousand people live in the county not in those upscale areas and go about their day just fine. If they want to take advantage they drive or hop on the metro. If you are looking to buy a house or even a townhouse in those areas plan on high sixes and low sevens. If you are looking to rent it depends on what you want to rent apartment vs. house and the size.

You can buy still buy an older single family home near transit, shopping, etc.
For example, the Twinbrook neighborhood in Rockville has homes in the $300,000-$400,000 range. You've got great schools there and you'll be between Rockville Town Center and all of the new development in White Flint. Metro would be walking distance.

Maybe, but you better hurry. Anything new a metro is causing prices to rise. Ripe is Crabbs Branch near the G-burg Metro. Behind Twinbrook are a lot of little homes, possible tear-downs

I just switched firms to get a 5 minute commute to the office. I had to do it.....I just couldnt drive back and forth the Vienna, VA every single day. I do believe, that can shorten your life, even with the ability to remote into your server from home.

I understand the feeling. I don't know about shortening life, but it consumes a lot of it. If I could afford to live near work, that's what I would do.
