Can anyone tell me what the traffic is like along 214 to and from the Edgewater area to the Largo Town Center Metro.

Anyone know anything about the traffic along 214 between Davidsonville and the beltway?

I am relocating to the area and considering the Davidsonville/Edgewater area based upon the schools and the rural atmosphere as compared to some of the other areas.

I am considering these areas in Maryland or the Ashburn Virginia area. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I currently live in Crofton, which is near Davidsonville and not too far from Edgewater. It is a great area, with good schools, relatively cheaper homes and the commute on 214 would be a breeze. I've travelled it many times during rush hour and it's really not too bad. I would not recommend Ashburn, I used to live in Northern Virginia and the sprawl is growing so rapidly. Traffic is such a pain. I also would not recommend Montgomery County, for similar reasons.

JaBradshaw,

What would be your best estimate of time to commute from Rt. 2 (Solomons Island Rd) at 214 to the Largo Town Center Metro during rush hour?

Is Crofton in PG County?

Thanks for your insight.

A good estimate is ~30-40 minutes. Crofton is in Anne Arundel.

I used to go that route everyday from Davidsonville, it is a good route up to the Beltway then it slows down a little bit.

I live in Ashburn right now, the area is great. Traffic is the same here just like any other part of the DC area, there are some heavy spots but it moves fine.

Golfinnova,

Of the two areas, Asburn or Davidsonville, which do you prefer and why?

Is the commute any worse or better from Ashburn than it was from Davidsonville?

I would rely on the Metro from Largo Town Center if I lived in the Davidsonville area and perhaps commuter bus from Ashburn.

Thanks.

It would Ashburn, here's why:

Loudoun County is making strides to widen it's roads or open new roads. The Loudoun County Parkway now goes from Rte. 7 past Redskins Park to the Dulles Greenway and beyond to Brambleton. The only real issue is that if you don't take the commuter bus then you have to invest in Smart Tag (E-Z Pass) which can be expensive since the Greenway is $3.20 each way. If you can car pool, it would be better than going on Dulles Toll Road as a single driver. I can say from my experience that the traffic moves better on the toll road, it is 66 that is the bear (I avoid that road if at all possible).

Davidsonville roads have not been widened at all, 214 is 2-way all the way until you get to 301. The only improvement is that the intersection at 424 and 214 was just widened for traffic going southbound on 424. There are no other plans to widen any roads, yet more subdivisions are being put in where horse farms used to be, if you come eastbound on 214 at 5 pm, the traffic backs up all the way to Davidsonville Elementary from the intersection of 424/214. This is 25 minutes minimum just to go a half-mile.

I have been in Ashburn 18 months, and have no problem driving anywhere. The only real backups happen at rush hour on Waxpool Road by AOL either coming or going on 28, but this traffic moves quickly. I go to Edgewater every 2 weeks, and look at all the traffic being created by the new Safeway then you have the new big church that opened by Riva Road at Catlett's BP. All of the elements for massive backups on any given day.

Ashburn has the roads to handle growth, the rest of Loudoun County is in trouble. Davidsonville roads are still in the 1980's. Let me know if I can help out with anything else about either area.

Golfinnova

Default 214 Commute

Not sure you are still interested in the commute along 214, however, I offer this. It is about as good as a comute you can get in the DC area. I commute from Edgewater to DC and it takes less then an hour. I will admit you do not go through the best of areas, but during rush hour I have not encountered or seen any problems. I used rt 50 for about 3 years then decided to to try 214 and will never go back to 50. If you choose it please do not advertse it as I believe it is the best kep secret in the DC metro area.
