Interesting article on area transportation. Although the NH light rail response didn't surprise me, this is the first time, I have actually heard MD's position on the street car connection. Although I can see why they may not want to pursue it short term, I think that they do need to consider the long term benefit as that corridor changes over the next decade. In lieu of a light rail other connections need to be seriously considered to support a growing area.

Is Maryland interested in connecting National Harbor with the District’s
streetcar system? Not really, Smith said. Maryland is far more

interested in expanded bus capacity and the possibility, in the far distant
future, of light rail. Light rail, he added, “gives the bigger bang for the
buck.”

What is the status of Maryland’s 16-mile Purple Line? The
formal RFP to the four teams shortlisted to build the light rail line— Maryland
Purple Line Partners, Maryland Transit Connectors, Purple Line Transit Partners
and Purple Plus Alliance — should be released by mid-July. A finalist will be
selected late in the year, and construction should begin by spring 2015. Smith
said Maryland hopes to have the line running by summer 2020.
