Crofton, Bowie, Laurel, and Odenton would be great for the Annapolis/DC commute as they are both off major highways to get to either location. Safe areas, family oriented towns. Columbia is good, but its a little farther out from Annapolis and DC.

Thank you, I've been looking at housing options in Columbia. The few places available for rent now within our budget have a no pet policy, or dogs only policy (we have 3 cats), so we ended up applying to rent a house in SS. Of that doesn't go through I will try again in Columbia.

Both areas are very safe. Many people like to lump all of pg county as unsafe. The places to avoid are around the beltway like capitol heights for examples. Areas like Bowie and Upper Marlboro are full of upscale developments with estate homes. I'd choose Crofton if your concerned with public school. Schools in pg county are horrible, those with the means send their kids to private school.

Don't rule out Calvert County! A 30 min drive to Annapolis and 50-60 minutes to Rockville. Safe, quiet community that is far enough away from the city but still close enough to enjoy.

Eta...oh, and our schools (and childcare options) are awesome!

Thank you! Ended up renting a house in Annapolis. The market was so competitive all over the place! Lost 5 properties until we got this one. We are pretty happy, hoping the commute doesn't kill us although it's looking like my husband will end up working in Baltimore.
