Way to go Maryland....Yay?

Quote:
Seventeen of the 100 top schools are in the Washington, DC area, reflecting the concentration of all things national security around the nation's capital. The University of Maryland handily outranks all other schools at number one, while Georgetown University (No. 10), George Washington University (No. 4), and American University (No. 20) — all considered among the country's 10 best schools for the study of international relations — rank among the top 25 most militarized schools.

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is the nation's second-biggest enroller of service members and their families who receive tuition assistance, and ranks second in the nation in post-9/11 GI Bill students. Maryland's Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-sponsored National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, and its NSA-sponsored Center for Advanced Study of Language conduct classified work at the University Research Park in Riverdale, which also hosts the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.

The author doesn't know that U of MD and UMUC are not the same thing and uses the terms interchangeably. I guess it's some kind of dig at 1% of Americans who use the GI Bill. Which, not surprisingly, is centered on distance-learning places like UMUC.

Yeah. That threw me too. But then UMD College Park does work with IARPA, the FBI, etc. as well. UMUC is well know for its cybersecurity program. It would have been nice if they separated the two schools.

"Militarized"? Poor use of the word.

Of course, with the number of military stationed here I wonder why there's that sense of surprise that the local schools would have a fair number of service members as students.

Militarize is a terrible word choice. From the headline, I was guessing it was referring to UMD's police department and the available equipment they have.... not even close haha.

They wanted a headline grabber. It certainly caught my eye.

I'd have thought that the most militarized university in this area would be the Naval Academy.

I don't understand. Do you mean that there are roving bands of armed soldiers in MRAPs patrolling university greenspaces, classrooms, dorms, and streets?

Or do you mean more military veterans choose to go to UMD?

If the latter, isn't this a silly thread? What is the consequence of such an occurrence?
