Hi there,

I'm looking to start a small business and I'm debating between Fairfax and Montgomery county.

Besides the higher taxes in MD and the worse traffic in VA, is there anything else I should know when making my decision?

What's your market area? Is what you're selling something that there is a demand for? How far will people drive to buy your product?

Read the various MD gov't business websites:

https://egov.maryland.gov/businessexpress

Start a Business in Maryland | Maryland Department of Commerce

Department of Assessments and Taxation

They all look different now than when I started (really transferred) my business in MD. With the websites it is possible to start a business here without consulting an attorney, but most people will want to speak with an attorney (and should).

I've started several businesses in several states and had attorney friends to speak with.

Besides taking up a lot of time reading the websites, I did not have much trouble. Fairly straight forward.
