Especially after requiring proximity to metro. Saying you want to be next to metro and then picking the farthest location from metro out of the three sites is counter to their own requirements. IN addition, Springfield would be most expensive of the three as Virginia is only providing $120 million in funds with $210 million required to relocate current facilities compared to Maryland's $310 million combined for the Greenbelt site which is 50 yards from the metro entrance.

It's not that we are disrespecting the site. Even though the metro may be "close", it isn't the closest. And even though the metro may be a 10-minute drive, new traffic patterns and 11,000 employees may turn it into a 20-minute drive. With Springfield and Greenbelt, there is no need to drive. You walk 50 to 70 yards from the metro exit to the front door.

In one Greenbelt rendering, there is a pedestrian tunnel from the metro exit into the FBI building, so you don't even have to deal with the elements. Landover and Springfield can't offer that.

I get it. Two sites in PG County is great, but you always put your weight behind the obvious winner. Landover is a consolation prize. If selected, it's good for the county, but not the best choice for transit and traffic mitigation because most employees would be compelled to drive. Who's going to wait around for 10 shuttles when they can drive to work and walk 5 minutes from the garage?

Greenbelt offers the best opportunity to encourage transit use because people aren't forced into a shuttle or their cars because the metro is too far to walk. Transit ridership would only increase when the Purple Line is finished. With Greenbelt having MARC, that will increase transit riders even more.

THe requirements state that the site has to be metro accessible. IF that wasn't the case, sure, Landover would get equal love. But right now, Greenbelt has the best metro/transit offerings off all three. In addition to being closest to I95 North to Baltimore than Landover adding an additional route for those who may take the toll road Route 200. FOr those south, they would just have to drive to the nearest metro.

Greenbelt
Landover
Springfield

Honestly, Springfield makes zero sense and should not even be considered at all. It's between the PG County sites.

Much of the FBI is conservative and leans Republican.

Besides, the new administration i.e. Trump, will have a big say on where it gets placed. One thing to look out for is Gov. Larry Hogan-R of Maryland did denounce Trump during the election so that could be a factor.

With that said I still think Maryland will get the new FBI HQ. One big reason is Ft. Meade is closer and UMD's new training academy co-op with FBI. Question is what does Springfield offer? Springfield Mall?

Default Senator Mikulski Scores $255 Million for FBI Headquarters in PG County

Quote:
UPPER MARLBORO, MD — Prince George's County is working hard to beat our Springfield, Va. as the new home of the headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and they got some help from Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, who secured $255 million in federal funding through a continuing resolution spending bill.
