I know there has recently been a Weis in LaPlata(and Accokeek), but it would be nice to have a Wegmans or Trader Joes closer.

If it helps, a Harris Teeter will open later this year in California.

Demographics (financial) and population density for the most part. Those companies look for certain characteristics and Calvert, contrary to what many want to believe (including a couple County Commissioners, but both of them are pretty dumb anyway), doesn't quite have them.

There is supposedly one going to be built in Dunkirk later this year. We've heard that before, though. There was supposed to be a Whole Foods built in Lusby several years ago. It opened up but disguised itself as a Food Lion, which I expect to happen this time but be a Weis.

The reality in Calvert's case is that we're almost over-groceried.

I thought this was odd too when I worked in La Plata. Evidently the Safeway in La Plata is one of the busiest in the country, so there's a market.

If any of those stores felt they would be successful there, they'd be there now. Southern Maryland is the least attractive area for businesses to expand to in the DC metro area.

Southern Maryland might as well be Southern Mississippi or Northern Alabama as far as high end and quality food/grocery outlets.

I remember when Giant Food was as good as any grocery store needed to be.
And they did it all rather well too.

How many more grocery stores does So Maryland need? LINK

College Park, MD is considered a food desert if that's any indication.

It's a good discount grocer, but tastes change, and people are willing to pay for higher quality offerings.

There was a time (before the Cohen family sold out to Royal Ahold) when Giant led the industry.
