My family is also mixed race moving from a CT suburb with little diversity. We decided to build down in Southern Maryland (St. Charles, MD) after taking a job in Navy Yard. Lots of new construction, Charles County schools, commuter buses into the city. For less money than anything closer to DC, a single family home with a yard (houses are close together) is feasible.

My youngest just moved back from LA(Burbank)after living out there for 7 years. She has said she would take 270,395,295,the Beltway and 95 at their worst compared to the 405 .

Funny I just checked out the Southern Maryland today. I really liked it. Thanks so much for the advice. We spent last weekend in the DC area to check out Montgomery County and PG County. I won't lie, we were not overwhelmed with what we found. We decide to increase our budget and look outside of those two counties and maybe into VA. We wanted the diversity and were really hoping PGC would work, but it was hit or miss when we drove through Fort Washington and Bowie. More miss than hit. Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone here.

Wow that's good news. I got so use to the 405. It never bothered me. We did experience quite a bit of traffic in DC, but it is totally doable with planning. Thx

Also look in northern Calvert County.

I believe you asked about schools. School systems in both Maryland and Virginia (well, Virginia has a few based on a town) are County based with attendance zones within the County itself. So that may be a bit different than you're used to in CT where, if I'm not mistaken, school districts are based around towns.

Wow, I did not know that. Thank you for the heads up.
