I'm 51, female, advanced degree, no hubby or kids, living in Pittsburgh (where I'm encountering serious breathing issues due to the pollution and allergies).

I'm considering relocating to the DC area, specifically Maryland, for job opportunities and a better social safety net. MD just seems more helpful than Pennsylvania in helping folks who ended up 'behind the 8 ball' due to no fault of their own.

What are your thoughts?

Depends on your profession.

I'm also from western PA, been here going on 35 years. I was only allergic to cats when I moved here. That changed after being here a couple years and I went for weekly allergy shots for years. Am now on daily maintenance medication.

As far as air quality goes:

If you plan on collegiate teaching in a liberal arts field, you will find that tenure-track is impossibly difficult to find (despite the large number of universities). Adjunct positions are a dime a dozen, but you do NOT want that to be your primary job. Beyond that, the area has an abundance of opportunities. It is not an exaggeration to say that if I quit my current position today, I will have an equal or better position within two weeks.
