With a one-year old kid, my wife and I want to finally settle down and we are completely new to Maryland.

Childcare will be located in Silver Spring. Wife works in Silver Spring (White Oak) and I work in Baltimore county. Due to student loans and childcare costs we're looking at a budget of about 450-500k. TH preferred as I'm not interested in caring for a lawn. Our financially situation may be considerably better in about 7-8 years so we're not looking for something permanent.

What's a safe and good mid-point for both of our commutes?

Any thoughts on North Laurel (Emerson) side? Driving through it appears safe and schools are decent but we know very little about the area.

Baltimore County is huge. Providing a city or town location for your work would be helpful.

Pick one end of the PITA commute route or the other (eg the better of the two jobs).
One parent gets 2 hours a day to do all the parent & household tasks while the other does 2 hours of daily commuting.
As soon as practical... the commuting parent gets a job closer to the home.

Right, living in North Laurel is pretty convenient to Catonsville, Arbutus; not so much to Hunt Valley.
