Our family is moving to the Rockville area soon. Maybe not exactly to Rockville, but somewhere between I-370 and North Bethesda. Currently looking for a rental, and also daycare for a small child. Could someone advise which areas to avoid when looking for both? And also, which parks along the I-355 to avoid?

In particular, I am interested in information about these areas:

I-355/Redland Blvd (close to Shady Grove Metro)
Rockville Town Center
I-355/I-586 junction
Montrose Crossing shopping center

What can you say about these neighbourhoods? Are any of these safe to live and walk around with a child?

Also, I have some other questions.

What are the good midrange furniture stores? I.e. better than Ikea but not too expensive.

Which grocery stores/supermarkets have a good deli section, with a selection of meats and cheese?

Would appreciate any tips about good daycares (preschool).

Thanks!

The odds of being a random victim of violent crime in any of the areas listed are exceedingly low. As for property crime, basic common sense must be exhibited across the DC region - lock your car and remove valuables if you don't want someone digging through it, for example. You can absolutely walk around with a kid in any of these places.

The one concern I would have would be related to high traffic levels/crossing busy streets. 355 and Veirs Mill are very car-centric and unappealing to walk along. If you're just planning on sticking to residential streets for walks to a park you'll be fine wherever. If you're trying to live a walkable lifestyle and reach restaurants, grocer, daycare, etc. on foot regularly then you'll want to live closer to Rockville Town Square or King Farm rather than along 355 or 586, themselves.
