My wife & I currently live in Orange County CA (after living in Brookline-Boston) and we're now moving back east. She will be working in downtown Bethesda and I'll be working in Tyson's Corner. We're looking for the urban feel again and looking specifically at downtown Bethesda to live. Lucky commute for the wife...

I've searched all the apartment websites and most places seem the same... it's tough to differentiate. Apartmentratings.com is a good resource but you never know who is actually rating (renter or management). We're looking for a 2 BR 2 BA ~1200 sq feet which I guess goes for ~$3k but of course I'd love to pay $2500. Any tips on which places are good and which to avoid before we go check them out in person?

Hey putty.....we are moving from San Diego to Bethesda in August (wife is Navy) and the wife is going to work at Bethesda Naval Hospital. I grew up in Maryland but left some 15 years ago. But Bethesda as a whole is a great area to live. If you have to live in the DC area.

I can't really offer you any advice on any particular apartments in Bethesda, but when it comes to the DC area "one look is worth a thousand words" in this case. I would make a short list of the apartment house's you've researched on the web that meet your requirements and stick to that. It would probably take you only a few days to find something in Bethesda that you'd like.

Bethesda is a little out of our price range and we intend on going a little north to Olney to lease a townhouse. The wife will take metro and we want a little more quiet area for we have two small children as well. But although I'm going to line up a Realtor to show us townhouses for lease I'm definitely not securing anything until we get to Maryland.

Your drive to Tyson Corner could be kind of bad depending on what time you have to leave in the morning and driving home in the evening. Don't envy you on your drive. Good luck with your move and hope you enjoy the DC area.

Thanks Bunky. I'll be starting at ~6:30 am so am traffic will be a non-issue. PM traffic won't be breeze but hey, living in SoCal as you know is no pleasure traffic-wise either. I currently drive 35 miles each way daily so the 11 miles I'll have in DC... I'll take it.

Good luck to you guys too.

Most of the apartments in the Bethesda are pretty good; I've only heard a few negatives from anyone.

A rule of thumb is the more close to downtown Bethesda you are the more expensive the apartments are.

I currently live in the Park Bethesda off River Rd, while the apartments are nice, they could be larger. We pay approx $1880 for a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment. The location is a little far from downtown, but it would be easy for you to take River Rd to 495 to Tysons.

Other places I have heard good things about are Bethesda Place, The Whitney and Highland House in Chevy Chase.
