I am from NJ moving to MD for school and am looking for apartments, and was suggested Silver Spring as one of the places to look.I looked through the forums and seem to be finding a lot of mixed reviews
about silver spring and lots of talks about New Hampshire Avenue. I read that New Hampshire avenue is drug and crime infested, but is it ALL of New Hampshire Avenue?

One place I found is on New Hampshire Avenue, right off of Randolph road.
Is this a decent area? I am a single female, so safety is of utmost importance. I know there are no perfect areas, but I certainly wouldn't want to live in an area that is known to be crime infested.

Thanks in advance!

I drive through that intersection every day. I don't know if it is crime-infested, but it is definitely a congested area and seems to have a very heavy hispanic presence.

Yeah, it feels like you are in one of the border states like Texas or California in a way, northwestern PG county especially around New Hampshire Ave, has a very huge hispanic and other immigrant populations.

How far off of Randolph Rd will you be? I live a few miles from there and can't recall any apartments near that intersection. That area is safe. However if you go a few miles west or south safety declines.

New Hampshire Avenue right of Randolph Road is fine. Langley Park, not so fine at all. White Oak is in between.

Langley Park is not that bad compared to other portions of the county. Yes, there is a huge influx of immigrants, but most are hard working people, however when there is good there is also bad, so I do concur, however Langley Park needs a lot of work done to it maybe gentrify it some, still though it is not as bad as central PG.

A little bit south of Randolph road.

it's an apartment for rent by owner. Which brings up another issue of whether I (a single female) would want to rent an apartment from a complete stranger (man), and in that area.

It sounds like you will be in White Oak, which I consider fairly safe. I suggest you do a search here on White Oak and/or the apartment complex for more info.

If you're not sharing the unit with the landlord then what does it matter? If he's subletting it you may want to check with the property management company.

Good luck with the move and school.

I keep reading and hearing not-so-good things about White Oak, and when I drove down there and looked at apartments in that area, it did seem kinda ghetto.

In a nutshell, you'll be just fiine. I'd just stay away from the high-rise apartments... I mean, you can safely walk anywhere in the area, but some parts do look bad, just use common sense.
