My family and I are looking to relocate outside the DC area for a nice single family home rental but if not, a two bedroom apartment. I really wouldn't want a apartment because I have noticed many complaints on maintenance issues and pest infestations. I am originally from the Baltimore area but I am no longer familiar with what the areas are like outside of DC. I am in need of advice on areas to look for that are still affordable, safe & definitely no pest issues.

I know I'm not the first or last to post this.

This is probably a pipe dream but any suggestions? thanks.

If you're used to the area for single family homes then perhaps sticker shock wouldn't be sooo bad. It depends on what you are looking for in regards to rental costs. I know from looking at some of the homes for sale you're looking at somewhere around 75% of their mortgage in rent getting tossed your way. Perhaps it's just me but I'd rather eat mac and cheese for a little while and own at 100% the mortgage than pay someone else 75% of theirs. =)

If you're interested in buying homes in the DC metro area or commuting distance, within southern Maryland, I can recommend a great neighborhood (even if you're not interested in a house I have there). I wish you the best in your search.

Marley Run in Huntingtown, MD. Do some research on the internet about that neighborhood. It was really safe, only about an hour from DC and Annapolis.

I have websites available in the classifieds section of this forum tool or if you want private messages that's cool too.

St. Mary's County is also a great place and has a great school system. It also tends to be cheaper than Calvert County and has more commercial development, especially around the California, MD area. I would not recommend the Lexington Park or Great Mills Area. I would recommend Charlotte Hall and Leonardtown in St. Mary's County.

True there is more commercial development, if you like the additional commute. I've spent many trips down there enjoying restaurants like Outback. Of course I move and then Calvert County gets it's own outback...figures.

Default nice area in close 'burbs

Look at Cheverly, MD. Right outside of DC, has its own police force and metro stop.
