Hello!

I'm relocating to the Baltimore/DC area very soon, and I'm trying to figure out where to live, etc. I've found a place in Bethesda, but I'm concerned about the commute from Bethesda to the Lithicum/Fort Meade area. Is that a reasonable commute or should I consider living closer to Baltimore? I would prefer the DC side. I'm a young professional in my early 20's, so I do want to be closer to either DC or Baltimore around other young professionals, but my preference is DC. Please advise!

Thanks for the help!!

PS. I looked into Silver Spring, but some of the areas downtown really scared me...

That's not too bad a commute (for the area anyways). Bethesda to Linthicum (where BWI Airport is located) is about 20 minutes with no traffic, and maybe 45 in traffic. The I-95 part isn't too bad (particularly since you're going against the flow), but the Beltway can certainly be troublesome, and if you choose to take the B/W Parkway that also gets congested often.

I'm surprised Silver Spring "scared" you, especially downtown. But then again, if you're cross shopping it with Bethesda I guess it might. My personal choice would be Silver Spring since it's about 5-15min less of a commute and you're guaranteed to pay less in rent (although it's still expensive).

Hi Krestin!
I too am a young professional in my early 20's and will be moving to the area and have to commute to the Linthicum/Fort Meade area for work. I would love to know where you decided to live and what other areas you looked at... if you or anyone else has any advice on popular areas for young professionals near this area please let me know! thanks : )

We live in Annapolis. My husband commutes to Columbia every day and drives right by Ft Meade on his way. It is not a bad commute for him.

First of all - Bethesda to Ft Meade, you are looking at a 45 minute to an hour commute, depending on the time of day. Bethesda is a good area for young professionals to live, but realize if you live there, traffic will NOT be great (I think people around here are used to bad commutes). Not terrible, but not ideal. You may have looked at shady areas in Silver Spring, the up-and-coming part in downtown is not bad, and it would shave about 20 mins off the commute. Honestly, if you can find a place in the right part of Silver Spring, that would be perfect for you.Annapolis is very pretty and a cool area to live, esp if you can be in the historic part. Two other options are Columbia and Baltimore. Depending on how much of an urbanite you are, you might like Baltimore, just be careful about where in the city you live. Columbia is much more suburban. It has EVERYTHING (restaurants, stores, shopping centers) except for a cool downtown. Nearby Ellicott City has a cute little downtown, though so that's an option. That said, it won't be the end of the world if you live in Bethesda. You can't really go wrong with the area, and maybe after a year, if the commute is stressing you out too much, you will have figured out where in Silver Spring you want to live.

Default your commute would be opposite to the rougher commute

Hi, I am born and raised in the DC/Balto metro area and can assure you that you will pay more to live in or around Bethesda, and generally speaking, much less to live in the Ft. Meade or Linthicum area. If you were commuting from Bethesda in the morning, it would in fact be much more tolerable than trying to go from Linthicum or Ft Meade towards Bethesda in the morning. The trip southbound on 95 or 29 in the am hours is not fun at all. Northbound, as you have suggested, would be much easier, but why pay so much more to live in Bethesda? With that said, yes, I like the environment and crowd I meet in Bethesda much more, and I suppose that is part of the reason it is so popular and much more expensive to live in, not to mention proximity to jobs. However, if it were me, I would live in or near the job you are suggesting near Linthicum or Ft. Meade because you should be able to find a place within minutes of your job for a fraction of the cost of living in Bethesda. Don't forget fuel and maintenance costs of your vehicle. The groceries and anything else you need to buy will be more expensive in and around Bethesda too. Your standard of living, and time you have for things other than getting stuck in traffic will be much better if you live closer to work, there are many fine, and safe neighborhoods around Linthicum. If you are already here, welcome to Maryland, we are some of the nicest people around!
