I plan on moving to Maryland this summer and I'm not too familiar with the various towns/cities in MD. I have come across some apartments in Sliver Spring, Gaithersburg, Germantown, and Rockville.
I would like to know from anyone, their thoughts on some if not all these towns in regards to safety and affordability.

Having fled the I270 corridor 17 years ago, all I can say is try to live as close to work as you can. Unfortunately in most cases that means you'll pay more to live closer in. I would strongly suggest before you commit to living anywhere, you check out what commuting during rush hour will be like.

I agree with last poster. It is a nightmare and I had to come from around the beltway to pass I270. All of those places are in Montgomery County, which is relatively safe areas. I hope the cost of living and the monster commute vs. the quality of life you seek are worth it.

AGREE totally w/ other posters. I spent an hour & a half commuting from Gaithersburg to the DC/Md line. On a weekend it was a blink & I would be there. SO it is decieving if u visit on weekends.
The further out the cheaper the rents. Or the dicier the municipality the cheaper the rent.
Montgomery County would be good.> Germantown/Damascus or Silver Spring/White Oak are cheaper in Montgomery County. The subway runs to Silver Spring and Gaithersburg. Germantown is one city over from gaithersburg, so u would have to drive or bus to Gaithersburg for the Subway. Damascus is way out but nice, about two towns further out from Gaithersburg. (Gaithersburg subway is on the red line & called Shady Grove)

Check out Laurel Md, some work out a commute via subway/bus or driving. Have heard it is affordable, never been there.

Beware, Rt. 270/Rt 29 & other arteries get jammed by 2:30 or 3:00pm on the way home. Good luck & keep safe, commuting is tiring.
