Hello Everyone,

I'm a Midwesterner who is moving to the DC/VA/MD area for work. I've heard so many things, good and bad. I'm a school teacher as you can see by my user name, so I'll be working in the DC public schools, but living suburban because, I'm not sure of my salary yet and I don't want to get a place I can't afford.

So I've been considering Alexandria VA. However, I can't seem to find a place that suits me. So, if you know of any great places in Silver Springs, Bethesda, or Hyattsville, I would love to hear about it. I've been studying the transit system and it looks like I'll be traveling on the 395/495 if I am driving or taking the Blue or Yellow Lines Metro into DC for work.

I'm trying to do my research before I get there, but any advice, places to go, places to live, neighborhood break downs, perspectives, you can give will be great.

I have friends who have family members there, so I've gotten there points of view. I'm in Michigan right now and I'm sure if you all are up on national news, you know how difficult it is here. So, it's time to move on.

Besides, my guy lives in Philly and I want to be closer to him and start my new life, in a new city, with a new place and a new job.

All advice is welcome, good, bad or indifferent. The apt. I'm looking into is in the price range of 900-1300 dollars and my salary will be close to 50 grand, so I can afford it. I plan to commute on the Metro to save gas and my utilities are covered in the place I want, so I'll save money there.

Okay, love to hear from you all and thanks again.

I thought DC schools just laid off 900 people.

Do you know what school? Commuting to a school via transit could prove challenging.

I won't give the name of the school, but it's near Capitol Hill. I didn't know about the lay offs. I've been getting calls and interest for months. Who knows maybe I'll be laid off next year, but right now the prospects are good. I was only going to try to commute to see how it worked. Don't know how comfortable I would be driving there. But we'll see. Thanks
