I'm moving to Germantown and work at Union Station. I have a very high tolerance for commuting, so long as I can sit down for most of it. I'll be taking the Marc train most days, but some days I will have to work late and will need to go to Shady Grove.
Does anybody know how early the parking lot at the Germantown Marc station normally fills up? Also on the later trains is there usually a time after which there are no longer any seats available? And that parking lot is free, right?
Also I would like to know what time the lot at Shady Grove generally fills up, and if anybody could comment on how long it might take to drive from the general area near the Germantown station to the Shady Grove metro at whatever time I would need to be leaving to get parking. Bonus points if anybody knows how long it might take on a bus!
Alternative suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Ok I drove through the Germantown Marc lot yesterday at 8:30am and there were still spaces available, although not too many. However, yesterday was a snow day, so schools were closed and the government had an unscheduled leave policy in effect, so I don't think yesterday was representative of a normal day.

The Brunswick MARC rarely fills up to the point where there are no seats. The only time it does, it is when the train is running a car short. Also, a lot of people get off at Rockville (most of the times, the next stop), and you would only have to wait a few minutes for a seat.

There's always parking at Germantown, but parking fills up pretty early at Shady grove. I don't remember when you need to get to Shady Grove. You are better off taking Marc all the way to Union Station.

I took MARC from Germantown for a couple of years and take the Metro from Shady Grove often. Germantown has 4 free parking lots (1 on the west side of the station, 3 on the east side of the station). I would recommend the huge parking lots on the east side (off MD-118 @ the 7-Eleven). I'm not exactly sure how full the lots get since I never took a late train, but when I used to take the first train out of DC the lots had a few spaces left. Then again that was a while ago before ridership skyrocketed. Now I see people parking illegally in the road between the lots, and the MTA sent an email warning that they would write tickets for that.entirely (since there are literally thousands of spots) but you have to park on the roof if you have a late commute. I recommend MARC though instead since it's much less of a hassle if you live in Germantown. Plus it's much quicker, and probably cheaper if you don't connect to Metro in DC, which most do.

Okay. I've rarely been there during a weekday morning rush, so I was partially speculating. My dad drives there for his commute to DC, so I guess he leaves pretty early to get a parking spot.
