I am considering taking a job in Arlington (Ballston), VA with the government and moving my family to the greater Washington DC area. Where should I live? We are moving from New Hampshire and have to sell our 400 K home here. Can any one give us present day cost of living facts?

Well, fortunately Ballston is on the DC Metro system, and that opens up alot of options if you are willing to use mass transit. You will probably be very disappointed on what a dollar (or $400k if that is your budget) will buy close to DC compared to rural New England. I would recommend renting for a period while you look intensively to find good housing bargins. Normal prices in Ballston area are such that $400k will get you an appartment/condo, or a very small house. While DC was not hit as bad as some of the other housing markets, it is still a buyers market with lots of properties for sale. Take your time and find exactly what you want, for the price you want.

I would also recommend taking a look at the maps for the DC Metro, Maryland MARC and VA commuter (can't remember the name) lines to see where you could commute to Ballston from. Driving in DC area is bad enough to make you psychotic.
