I recently got into a University of Maryland in a graduate program and am looking into apartments before fall this year. However, I come from North Philadelphia, "ghetto" central. I was recently told that moving to the college park/greenbelt/hyattsville area wouldn't be any better. It's really worrying me in the sense that I'm trying to move up in the world not go back to "the hood". Especially if I can expect to stay the next 5-7 years of my life in this area.

UMD does have graduate student apartments at an apartment complex called graduate hills. However I hear these are really old and most people have their car robbed/broken into at least once while living there. There's also the fact most apartments where I've lived in PA are around $700 for equal quality to Maryland and in really nice neighborhoods. Most of the apartments I've looked at range from $908 to $1300 in the area.

Now I'm in the situation where the graduate program is one of the best in the country for me. But the neighborhood isn't what I would call ideal. Can't have everything I suppose, but as a non-native I'm confused as to where's the best place to live while still being withing range of some sort of public transit. My girlfriend (who is unable to drive) will be coming with me and probably transferring from her current job at staples to one in the area. Possibly transitioning to UMD with me at a later point. If any locals could offer any advice as to where or what apartments to look into I'd appreciate it.

College Park and Greenbelt are actually said to be one of the better areas to live in PG county. (I have also been researching a lot!)

Hyattsville is typically cheaper but its cheaper for a reason... More crime, not as nice of a place to live.
