So... what's up with North Laurel, the HoCo part? People of color tell me it's wonderful; people without color tell me to stay away. There are a great deal of beautiful homes for sale and they are reasonably priced for Howard County... the schools seem pretty good too... Should I be wary? Do I sense possible white flight? Or is just another case of people equating a bad area with black people?

I live in Laurel and I've never heard anything about black people being a negative influence on that area. I guess if someone was mentioning the Whiskey Bottom area, there might be more blacks than whites but its not the ghetto by any means. If you are referring to Route 1 area, probably more of an hispanic presence due to the race track. Also, there are still alot of (please excuse the expression) "red-necky" whites along the Route 1 area. Laurel overall is very diverse and I think you may have been given inaccurate information.

I live in Laurel on the PG side and have friends on the HoCo side. They are very happy with where they are--there are some newer developed homes so you can get a great deal. You're very close to places like Columbia that I enjoy visiting, although I actually like being further south near Laurel Lakes just because of the convenience of all the shopping. But if I wanted a nice single family home, I'd be glad to be in the HoCo part of it. I'd also be paying more in property taxes, too. I don't know anything about the quality of the schools.

I get the impression it's just as diverse as any part of this area in Maryland.

When someone tells you to stay away from an area, take it with a grain of salt and go see for yourself. Nine times out of ten some people have gripes, some are outright prejudiced, and some just have no clue and will say anything negative about Prince George's County. I've lived here all my life and many places people deem "unsafe" are really gems in the county.
