I'm moving from New Jersey for a job in NW DC. I'm looking for a home in a nice neighborhood with young families. I need to be close to a metro (15 minute drive). Can I get a nice place (2k square feet, 4 bedrooms) for $600k in Bethesda or Chevy Chase?

need some help. thanks.

4 Bedrooms for 600 in B-CC? Forget it, it doesn't exist. You would have to spend at least 800K.

Look in Silver Spring or Rockville. Still close to NW, DC but way cheaper.

If you are dead set on Bethesda/Chevy Chase, then you will have to sacrifice something for 600K. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's true.

Try looking at condos or townhomes, but with less square footage. So you'd have to sacrifice a bedroom or two.

There are options, but they do sell quickly. Unlike much of the country these areas have not been significantly affected by the economic downturn. There are many people looking in the lower price ranges in Bethesda and Chevy chase, there are occasional deals but you need to know what you are looking for and be ready to make an offer when a property is listed that has what you want. I highly recommend working with a realtor as they are the only ones with the most up to date info - the third party websites with real estate listings are always delayed.

here's one...

9828 Belhaven Road, Bethesda MD - Trulia

Even if you have to buy the worst house on the best street, it will be well worth it in the long run.

I know someone who has been looking for a $600,000 townhome in the same area for the past 2 years...has been outbid everytime.
