My wife, 1 year old son, and I are relocating to D.C. and are looking to buy a 3 bedroom townhouse or single family home. We are looking at homes in Brookland and Silver Spring/Takoma Park in the 450k range. Important factors to us are, proximity to metro, long term home value appreciation, access to recreation for my wife and son, and a walkable neighborhood. It looks like Brookland is a quieter neighborhood, it is closer to my office near the white house, and you can get more house for the money. But, there is more to do in Silver Spring, and public schools would be an option down the road.

Can anyone offer any tips about these areas to guide us with our decision. Or, are there other neighborhoods we may be overlooking?
