Moving to DC from PA, Where to live (neighborhood, good schools)

I am relocating with my family from NEPA to the DC Metro in a few months for a new job.

I am looking for a good safe family neighborhood with good schools and that has a reasonable commute.

The job will pay around 110-120k. I am not sure what that will get me in the DC area.

My children are 5 & 2.

We were looking in Maryland since we have friends that live near Frederick but I am not sure how the commute is from there.

Any suggestions?

Frederick is far, but it does have a commuter rail station so it might not be so bad if you commute by train.
