My family will be visiting DC in April for a vacation. We are looking at an apt. for rent on Maryland NE/Elliot Street near 14th St. Opinions on this area? The Metro bus stop is a short block away. We will be returning from our travels after dark on several nights. The apartment thing fits our family - cheaper than hotel rooms, we can cook some of our own meals and we all like being in one place. BUT, I don't want to feel too out of place or unsafe. Your opinions would be appreciated!

Well, I'm not certain what you're referring to by "feeling out of place," but if one word could be used to describe this area it is "transitioning". The pros are that it's very close to many of the H Street restaurants and bars, Capitol Hill, and is a hop, skip and jump to central DC.

The cons are that it is not served by Metro and is not the safest nor most tourist-friendly. It's not an unsafe neighborhood, but it's not Dupont or Georgetown either. Much of this depends on your personal level of comfort walking around and spending time in gritty, transitioning urban neighborhoods.

I've known plenty of folks in Capitol Hill so I'm kinda familiar. Don't know Elliot St that well though. But looking at a map Elliot St is okay but you're awfully close to no-go Trinidad.

My mother is coming up in April and putting her up in a apartment sounds kinda neat versus an expensive hotel. I will probably be in charge of picking the hotel for her and possibly checking out the rooms to see if they're okay. My stepfather is staying home so she'd be by herself while I was at work. So would I put my mother up at Elliot St? Hmmmm...I'd have to ponder that one in my heart.

I can understand the "feeling out of place" reference. There are some neighborhoods where a tourist no matter the color is going to stick out like a sore thumb. Unless I knew people in the neighborhood I'd say no.
