An old saying: Taxation without representation.

In more ways than one.

so, state tax is replaced by income tax and federal tax or income tax is a lot more in DC?

How does this compare to Maryland's state tax, the income tax in DC?

I'm so lost when it comes to taxes...

Uh state tax is income tax...

When I worked at a supermarket in Maryland (I'm also a Maryland resident) there were various taxes/withholdings:

Maryland income tax
County income tax
Federal income tax
Federal OASDI (social security) withholding
Federal Medicare withholding

In DC you have a DC income tax, a Federal income tax, OASDI tax and Medicare tax.

funny how despite all the taxes we still can't have a proper ****ing budget

Not for personal income taxes it doesn't. It's on the higher end, but eclipsed by a number of states. DC's highest personal income tax rate of 8.5% is substantially lower than states like Oregon (11%) Hawaii (11%) and New Jersey (10.75%), for instance.
