Several weeks after Kwame R. Brown was elected D.C. Council chairman in November, city officials were asked to order for him a "fully loaded" Lincoln Navigator L with a DVD entertainment system, power moonroof and polished aluminum wheels.
It had to be black - all black, inside and out - and it had to arrive in time for his inauguration Jan. 2, never mind the District's projected $400 million budget shortfall.

It is one thing if you are driving a tricked out car that has the money coming out of your own pocket. It's quite another if the taxpayers are financing it. This does not seem fiscally responsible. Americans are having to cut back why should elected officials be any different.
Fenty tooled around in a SmartCar. He had a Navigator as well, but it's unclear whether he requested one. The SmartCar was requested specifically by him.

That white one was his own Navigator, I recall him driving and illegally parking that monstrosity while he was running. I'm not well versed in such, but it was *huge*-- larger than a normal SUV-- and no doubt of the pimped out variety. Michael Brown drives one too. Whatever-- they can drive anything they want. I just can't get worked up about a politician maxing out his or her perks. They all do it. As for the return of "Barry style government"-- well let's see how many (white) developers get rich(er) off of sweetheart deals before we make that call.

I get worked up about it when said politicians won election on an anti-corruption, pro-transparency platform. Perhaps I am simply expecting too much from the electorate to hold elected officials accountable for their behavior. Gray is busting the personnel budget for jobs for his friends, and Brown has two fully loaded luxury SUVs sitting in his driveway; meanwhile the city is staring down a $175 million budget shortfall and asking its residents to tighten their belts. So yes, I do get a bit worked up about that.
Someone should remind Mr. Brown how well this type of behavior worked out in the end for another Kwame in Detroit (Kwame Kilpatrick).
