I'm a PhD student in the UK and I've just won a scholarship to work at the Library of Congess for 6 months. I'm looking at places to live now and it's overwhelming as I'm not familiar with any of the areas! My number one priority is safety being a single woman, but convenience to the LoC is also important. My budget is around $1000 a month (although I wouldn't say no to cheaper!!!) and I am happy to share an apartment/house. So my question is, which areas should I be looking at?

Thanks for any help

If you're willing to live with roommates, I'd consider a room in a group house in Capitol Hill/Eastern Market. You'd easily be able to find something for $1000 or less. It's a very safe area and you'd be able to walk to the Library of Congress. Capitol Hill has a decent amount of restaurants and cafes, and has a few bars, although is is quieter than some other neighborhoods in DC such as Dupont or U Street. If you post more about what you're looking for (ie do you mind roommates? do you want somewhere quiet or somewhere with a lot of nightlife?), it would be easier for people to help you.

Agree! I would do Capitol Hill and walk to work. Plus, Eastern Market offers some good places to eat and hang out all in a less stressful environment.
