Well being from a place that no one wants to claim inside the lines, but outside the lines they do (Detroit) I'd say at least qualify it with, "I live in the Greater Metropolitan DC Area" LOL!! I know thats alot to say but thats what I've done. Or just say, "I live in a suburban area of DC" whatever. Up to you, no one is gonna pull out a map and make you prove it. LOL

When I lived in Rockville I was traveling in Idaho and stopped to gas up. The young woman cashier saw my license plates and said, "I've never heard of Maryland. Where is that?". Very amusing.

Whenever someone in another part of the country asked where I was from, it was simplest to just say, "I live in the Maryland suburbs of D.C." Covers all bases.

Yeah, same here. Not sure about Maryland, but being from Michigan, people get it confused with every other M-State out there....Mississippi, Minnesota, etc. It's all the same to most people nationally or internationally. Basically if you aren't from a NYC, DC, Boston, 'California', than people will have a hard time placing it - even moreso overseas.

I either say DC area or Northern Virginia, which most people seem to know about.

I'm from Mississippi. The Dirty South. I will never claim DC, no matter how long I stay here.

All of the youth footbal teams in that area are consolidated. The are called KLM. Kettering, Largo, Mitchellville.

The confusion might be because there are 3 states on the east coast that begin with Ma.

I live in Fairfax, and what I usually say to people is "I live in VA right outside of DC".

Gets the point across without misrepresenting where you are from
