Please post some of your favorite day trips or weekend trips that one can get to from the DC area. Trips should be within a few hours via driving or public transportation of DC (not requiring an airplane or otherwise too difficult to get to). Bonus points if the trip is not too expensive and is public transportation accessible. Just curious as it's always nice to find more fun things to do.

One of the beauties of this area is the preponderance of interesting places that are easily within a day's reach of the city.
The Shenandoah is an obvious choice. An awesome and gorgeous national park just two hours from DC.
Virginia's wine region is fun, too. Few wineries are exceptional, but the quality overall is increasingly decent and many have tasting rooms that are really enjoyable.
Frederick, MD is a fun place to kick around for an afternoon and evening, particularly if you enjoy antique browsing and good food.
Baltimore could be a long weekend in its own right, but an afternoon spending time in the BMA or the Walters, and then dining in/around the Harbor, Fells or Canton is a nice day in my book.
Ditto Annapolis, which has an awesome downtown.
Maryland's eastern shore is a great place to go kayaking, bird watching, or just hang out on a quiet beach. Some nice picturesque towns around there as well.
Finally, spend some time visiting the region's Civil War battlefields, like Manassas or Antietam. They can be quite moving.
I really like Annapolis for a weekend. Cute little downtown on the water. Good food. Usually some lively bars with bands, etc.
If you are shooting more to get away from it all, the Shenandoah NP, blue ridge parkway, etc is great for beautiful mountains and nice hiking and camping.
If urban is more your thing, then of course you can easily reach Baltimore, Philly or even NYC by rail pretty quickly. I used to take the Acela between DC and NYC and that was a nice ride that put you right in the middle of the city.
And it is a bit far for a regular weekend, but with a few extra days the Outer Banks are great.
