Maybe violent crime is down everywhere because psycho gangbangers are finally getting tired of killing each other.
Well, you know, that's actually what I was getting at with my "changing criminal behaviors" comment--there have been theories floated that suggest this.
I've said it back in 09 but soon as Obama took office murders went down in DC and elsewhere. In 07 DC has 189 murders, in 08 DC had around 184 murders, PG 134...after Obama DC in 09 134, PG 99.......coincidence? maybe correlation...yes
Let's get this thread back on track, ok ? If you're confused as to what it might be, go back to the beginning and read the 1st post.
Yac.
Unless we're supposed to simply stand around patting ourselves on the back for lower murder rates, it seems to me that this thread is meant to be a discussion about what is driving the persistent drop in DC's homicides. If not, then what exactly *is* the purpose of this thread?

I was hoping for something celebratory about where the District is going, actually. I get so tired of the smugness on these issues in a certain other forum I read. Anyway, I think we have exhausted the topic of the causes of the decrease, which too easily slides over into a general discussion of the causes of crime.
Could we segue into the consequences of the decline? Is the murder rate an independent driver of location and development decisions, or do you think its more the total crime rate that matters? Do the district wide rates matter, or are all decisions specific to individual locations?
I'm particularly fascinated by the notion that as crime declines in some areas, DC police reassign resources to a shrinking number of remaining troubled areas.
It's the result of crime shifting to Maryland, better policing in DC, and having a community organizer in the White House.
I realize you're trying to prop up your profession, but Obama was a community organizer in Chicago, not DC, for a few years in his early 20s. He's mostly been a lawyer, professor, and politician. Unless you have solid evidence to the contrary, there's no correlation. Sorry.
Isn't crime down nationwide though? It's just not a DC/MD thing, I think it's a nationwide thing as well. Unemployment is up, you can't rob people who have no money.
I think DC's improved murder and crime rate is a product of the advancing Information Age. People, both young and old, are more aware of things going around, and the rampant/instant exhange of opinions and ideas between individuals/groups is helping to bolster social awareness and curb the ignorance that serves to nurture illicit behavior. Just my $.02.
