Hi! I'm a recent college graduate moving to D.C. for a job. I'm from New Orleans, but I've never spent any significant time in the D.C. area. I actually just got a second job offer to work at a hostel part time (along with my full time) job, which will allow me to stay in the Petworth area for free until I have enough saved up to get my own place.

This seems like a sweet deal, especially with the economy. The hostel I'd be working and living at is at 4115 8th Street, NW. I've google-mapped the area, and it seems residential and quite nice. Can anyone tell me any more about the neighborhood?

Thanks for your help!

Petworth is a transitional neighborhood - it's gentrifying rapidly but there's still at least one drug house on most every block, and 2011 has seen an unusual amount of violence in the area. That said, the area you're looking seems pretty quiet and is very convenient to the metro, as well as some bars & restaurants along Upshur Street and Georgia Ave. Lot's of young people are moving to the nieghborhood, so it should be a good match.

I've got friends that live on Taylor St., and it's a sketchy neighborhood. Please be careful, pay attention to your surroundings and really don't walk around after dark. They've had multiple break-ins in their condo building, car break-ins, robberies, etc. I cannot recommend it, especially to a newcomer.

Agreed. Stay alert, use good common sense and you should be fine. Look up the year-to-date crime statistics for the area and decide if it's something you can live with:

I will chime in as I actually live in Petworth and have for several years. You will be fine. Just don't walk with your headphones in your ears late at night, talking on your phone ..... etc... as you shouldn't in any neighborhood.

You will be within about a 7ish minute walk to the Metro via Georgia AVE which is a well lit, highly trafficked street.

Honestly, if you are leaving for free I would jump on it and not look back...

Yes, there is crime but in many cases the "victims" usually (not always) are involved in illegal activities themselves. I walk all over the neighborhood (no car) and have never been put into a situation where my life was in danger or threatened. I am more scared of being hit by a car by insane drivers than I am fearful of being a victim of a violent crime.

Bonus you will be close to a great coffee shop - Qualia.

For more information about the area I would spend some time reading through Prince of Petworth. That will give you some perspective from current Petworth residents.

The posters here are pretty much on point about Petworth. I worked in that area for six years. I have seen nothing but people move in and virtually no one moving out. It seems like every other month, a new business or building is popping up in the neighborhood(mostly along Georgia Ave).

To ehco what arkcitynative stated, most of the crime victim in Petworth are involved deeply in illegal activities themselves. Also, most of the police activity around 8th & Taylor(nearest intersection to that address) involves drug arrests and the occasional fights between the youngsters from the nearby schools.

Send me a DM and I can give you more information about that address, street and neighborhood that I cannot post here.

Default Farragut - Hamilton close to Georgia

Hi, same question here but further north, around Farragut to Hamilton just east of Georgia Av (7th-9th). I've been walking around there but I'd greatly appreciate some feedbacks, thanks !

My only word of caution is that I believe that particular hostel has changed names a few times to evade perennially bad reviews. I don't want to besmirch any business' reputation erroneously, so I simply suggest that you proceed with caution. It's generally not a good idea to mix your employment relationship with your housing accommodations. If for any reason one or the other doesn't work out to your satisfaction, you may find yourself in a bind (they may not be willing to pay you cash if you don't want to keep living there for free, and if they decide they don't want or need you to keep working there, you may be out of a home).
