Bottom Line - Washington tops list of most 'shopaholic' cities (http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/08/8701050-washington-tops-list-of-most-shopaholic-cities - broken link)
Embarrassing. It angers me that people (private contractors) are making killer salaries from federal taxpayers and lawyer/lobbyist types who are raking in record income growth and bonuses because they are succeeding in making Mega Corporations even more profitable. Businesses get more profitable when regulations are killed, labor laws are weakened and consumer protection measures are voted down.
Why not celebrate by blowing your hard-earned cash at restaurants and upscale fashion shops. I mean, who cares about poor people, unemployed people, disabled people, children's health care, our failing public school systems, our crumbling infrastructure networks when big corporations and defense contracting firms are well represented.
I've always regarded this area as 'Affluenza Central', where 'keeping up with the Joneses' is required if you want to be a 'somebody'. No thanks, I am content with just being me and not caring about Joe's widescreen monstrosity or Jane's Coach purse.

That's right. People should stop spending money on restaurants and fashion. Then shops and restaurants will go out of business, we'll have more unemployed people, more poor people, more children without health care, and less school and other taxes collected. That's what you want, right?

You should spend some time in Dallas, Los Angeles, or New York if you think this place has a "keeping up with the Joneses" issue.
I guess people are damned if they do / damned if they don't. Businesses and wealthy people are being attacked for holding onto their profits and not spending their money to spur the economy, and now they're being attacked for spending their money in the economy. There's a lot of excess contractor money, but better to have them putting our money back into circulation so it can multiply its impact.
I still don't understand who funds your grand socialist vision if no one's allowed to make money.

I use to think people here were wealthy like the people on TV in shows such as the O.C., etc, (not that I watch them of course) when I was in elem and middle sch.
But they are wealthy. Just not in the same context as what I mentioned. Everyone here drives a typical Asian or American car (Honda is quite big here with the dealership here) and the occasional European car brands where the opposite is true in these shows. Most people here run their cars to the ground and are more practical (mostly because they have kids and what not) and outgoing which I kind of find funny and clever.

Man, I love the people in this town!
It will all come to an end eventually. With 15 trillion we are saturating the world with our debt. Supply and demand. The more supply of our bonds, the lower the prices and the higher the interest rates. The (Second) day of reckoning is coming.
I'm not surprised, DC is all about status. It's supposedly a liberal area but its the worst kind of limosuine liberals who inhabit this area. Every time i see one of those yuppie idiots at a fancy cupcake shop I just want to punch them in the face.
Hmm.. Looks like I better stop buying fashionable clothes anymore, because there are poor people in the world. Makes a lot of sense.
I can't tell if you're a yuppie douche unintentionally illustrating my point or a cleverly sarcastic fellow intentionally illustrating my point. Enjoy yourself...or choke on a rag depending who you are
