My wife lost her job and is quite the topic of conversation among her friends. For all the talk about high unemployment in America among our peer group of White College Educated professionals in their 30s and 40s, no one we know, other than my wife, is unemployed here in the DC area.
I looked into the statistics and they said that 3.4% of the residents of Arlington County VA are unemployed. My friends assume that most of those people are African American and Immigrants who suffer from discrimination, or they are people who lack work skills or are English as a second language. Or they are just out of school and have no experience or older people who are facing age discrimination.
I would suspect that very few college educated white women in their 30s with a track record of success, good job references and skills are unemployed in this town. Maybe 1%.

They don't have to be white. Generally speaking, people in their 30s who have a high educational attainment and years of work experience have a very low unemployment rate in the D.C. area.
Yep, I know 3 or 4 highly skilled and educated women in Arlington/DC who are out of work due to RIFs or downsizing. It seems that a LOT of people who have been in this are for a while seem to feel immune to layoffs...like they are in some sort of bubble. Coming from Detroit, which has the worst economic climate in the country, to DC opened my eyes to a new level of ignorance.
I know several and that's fewer than in the past few years. Your wife is not alone, except for the fact that her circle of 'friends' sound like they are treating her and her unfortunate situation like some sort of anthropological study.
A couple of years ago when I was looking for a job in DC, I attended meetings of a job search Meetup group. Everyone in the group was unemployed and had at least a bachelor's degree. Most of them were white and out of those, about half were in their 30s and 40s. In these economic times, lots of people are out of work, of all races...but the stats I've seen do show that unemployment rates are higher for blacks and hispanics.
