A small number of very vocal members of this forum (not the person you quoted, who I'm pretty sure was being sarcastic) believe that anything enjoyed by the professional class of DC is automatically bad, even if said thing is completely innocuous like kickball and dog parks. And especially if it's white or asian people enjoying it. They seem to believe cities are static things to be preserved in amber and that DC circa 1990, despite its ridiculous crime rate and crackhead mayor, was a glorious beacon of authenticity and humanity that has since succumbed to an onslaught of Starbucks and cupcakes that, despite vast improvements in almost every measurable way, has plunged DC into a new dark age.

Or something like that.

I knew I could count on BlueFly to respond. Hee Hee Hee.

I have one quibble though. The food trucks in DC primarily serve the professional, affluent class in the downtown area. Just visit Farragut Square around noon and you will see the food trucks lined up on either side. The square becomes a real food court.

The prices vary too. Some food entrepreneurs will charge $10 for a meat dish while others offer a discount at smaller portions. But if I am a poor working person, I would still get a better deal eating at McDonalds or ordering a half-smoke from a street corner vendor.

The food truck owners are either chefs who could not find steady work in a restaurant or amateurs who think they have the grillz skillz to make some delicious dishes. The amateurs probably spent their unemployed days watching the Food Network. Nonetheless, the target market is the 20 and 30-something yuppie class working in the downtown corridors. You would not catch the mostly white hipster food truck owners traveling to Anacostia to serve customers next to housing projects.

I guess some Americans just aren't used to functional cities. I can't believe I'm defending these stupid pants-less subway rides, but just looked up a few locations and they have occurred in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, London, Sao Paolo, Tokyo, Toronto, Paris, and even Taipei for chrissake! Public snowball fights have also occurred in New York's Times Square, Chicago, Boston Common, Paris... it goes on and on.

I don't get why you all harp on DC so much as if this behavior exists only here. All cities have issues, but imagine any of those listed without their vitality - their expensive restaurants and their cheap streetcorner meals. I just don't understand this bitter quest to keep a tax base and services out of DC. It strikes me as oppressive and controlling.

Are $6 food truck meals that bring options to parts of the city without much food now elitist? I just don't get it.

Could you explain what has changed in DC to 'allow people to defend themselves', that has resulted in the reduction in murders?

I can't think of anything else that has changed along the lines of self defense in the district other than the SC ruling a while ago. That didn't address the prohibitive barriers to gun ownership in DC. Even the council's recent action on the issue doesn't make the path much easier, and wouldn't go in effect until after Congress approves it in November. The Times, for all of its craziness, did an interesting piece on how hard it is to get a gun in the district.

Personally I think it's abruptly clear that the socioeconomic upheaval and billions and billions of private investment into neighborhoods that were previously neglected havens for crime that has made the impact.

I'm pretty sure I've seen african americans (at least some of whom have clerical jobs in the Govt) buying from the food trucks on M street SE. Yes the market is for working people getting lunch, but thats not always affluent people, or white people (much less young hipster people)

You don't find them in the suburbs for the most part either. They are mostly a lunch time thing that serves concentrations of employment.

I would think so - but looking police district by police district in addition to declines in districts 3 and 4 (along transition border) there was a major decline in district 7 - thats historic Anacostia and points south. Is that about changes at Barry Farms?

Don't forget that unless you make a six figure salary, you're actually unable to play kickball. Congress just loves legislating fun in the District.

indeed
without mayor barry's fine work
its hard to see DC needing a financial control
board
hence no Mayor Barry, no Anthony Williams
A debt of thanks
is owed
