You could *maybe* get an English basement type apartment. An English basement is basically the lower level of a townhouse with its own separate entrance. This type of apartment is definitely much cheaper than something in an apartment complex. I have seen some around $1,300.

You could also find something in your price range within walking distance of the Petworth metro. I would consider Petworth to be safe enough, although everyone has their own preferences. Petworth is also pretty quiet and has more parking than the downtown.

Also the Capitol Park towers near the Federal Center SW & Waterfront metros would be very convenient to where you're working and have "moderate income" housing units. I think for a single person you need an income that is in the mid-40s-k or lower to live there (although I'm not sure exactly what the precise limit is). These apartments include utilities and I think would be in your price range.

I don't know of any one bedrooms in SW or Navyard for $1,300. Last I checked they were selling studios for $1,800/ Month at Navy Yard. With a budget of $1,300 you may want to look East of the river or out in the burbs or settle for a small studio in a nice hood in the city with street parking and if it comes with a pool or fitness center consider yourself lucky.

Sorry, my apartment is already set to be rented out when I leave for Richmond otherwise I would totally recommend you move in here, it's a real find and will probably go for $1000/mo max once I leave.
