I'm not sure whether to post this in the DC forum, or the Virginia forum, or the Maryland forum, but here goes:
I'm taking the Auto Train from Florida, which lets me off in Lorton VA, and then I'm driving to Pittsburgh. I've looked at the AAA routing maps leaving Lorton and getting around DC into Maryland, and it looks like it's going to be Mr. Toad's Wild Ride trying to navigate all those expressways until I make it to I-70.
Is this trip something a reasonably intelligent but somewhat older driver should be able to accomplish? I will have my trusty GPS with me.
No, the train is supposed to arrive at Lorton at 9:30, if it's on time, and then it takes some time to get the car off the train, so I think I'll be going through there later morning to mid-day. Thank you!
Well, I have actually managed the Breezewood interchange before, so I'm ok with that one. The DC area stuff is all new to me, and it looked on the map like a series of quick changes, which reminds me of the time I got totally lost in Chicago trying to get from O'Hare to Evanston and ended up downtown. Not my finest driving hour. But that was pre-GPS.
It's really simple. I-495 pretty much runs into I-270 and into I-70. Follow I-495 towards Tysons Corner. There is a sign along I-95 before I-495 that tells you how to get to I-270.
The only thing is that there is a lot of merging to the left once you're on 495. It goes from many lanes down to 4 lanes. There's also a huge construction project with weird lane shifts so just be careful. Other than that it will be easy.

The traffic should be okay during that time (unless there's an accident). There's a lot of construction going on in some parts, like the Tysons Corner area.
But overall, it's an easy route. Not bad at all. Just follow the signs and you'll be fine.
