Just to pre-empt a lot of the responses: I am especially curious about the buses. I figure a lot of people are going to say the Metro lines are safe, but sometimes the Metro stations are not. But very few people have discussed the buses at that hour. So I am curious about two very specific things:

1. Are the buses at that hour generally safe? There are 16th Street buses that run that late on the weekends. Are these safe at 2AM?

2. Are the metro cars generally safe at 2AM? Obviously it's the weekend. My hunch is that a lot of people take the Metro that late after being out at the bars. True?

Thanks in advance.

The only people out that late will be spilling out from bars. So, expect drunk laughter, occasional vomit or effluent release, and a fight. More risky on the eastern side Maryland termius locations.

Some people may raz you for falling off that stage back in 96 but you will be fine on metro or the S1/S2/S4 buses late at night. I'd be more concerned about the walk home. Stay on main streets, well lit areas, and in a group if possible.

Will be taking red line and s2/s4 buses to Silver Spring late at night on weekends. Living very close to SS metro.

The metro stations and buses themselves should be fine. The only issue would be your walk back home from the metro station or bus stop if you live in a neighborhood that isn't safe or that doesn't have much foot traffic at night. If you are stumbling around drunk/too drunk to be cognizant of where you are going, your walk home from the metro/bus will also be more dangerous as you'll look like an easy target. Most bars close around 2am, so at 2am you would have a lot of people heading back home via public transportation.

So it's common for people to use public transportation at that hour? Good to know.

I think you will be fine since you live in downtown Silver Spring which is a well-lit area for a walk home. There are tons of other young people who take the metro to the Silver Spring area late at night on the weekends.

Avoid the Red and Green lines and the orange inside MD after 12:30 and you will be fine. Obviously getting off the train near Nationals stadium at 2am is not a good idea.

What do you think about the Red Line from Dupont or the Green Line from U St/Columbia Heights into Silver Spring's Metro at 2AM on a Friday or Saturday night? Assume I would be living next to the Metro station so safety walking outside would not be a problem.

It's fine. The S-buses are fine too. The 16th Street line is a safe one.
