Sacred Circle 919 King St Alexandria VA You can take the blue or yellow lines and get off at the King Street metro.

While DC is definitely straight laced not EVERYONE is straight laced. I hate it when people make blanket statements about the DC area because 9 times out of 10 yours truly and my friends do not fit into whatever blanket statement category is being listed.

Try riding the red line metro to Takoma station and look around Carroll Avenue in downtown Takoma Park. I was just there recently.

DC is starchy yuppies and ghetto people, no real inbetween of cool or creative people. Lambda Rising in Dupont Circle is the only "alternative" store I can think of, as in alternative lifestyle.

Lambda Rising closed over a year ago. The price of progress I suppose. One really doesn't need a gay book store these days. One can download the alternative book to their kindle or nook.

Second Story Books in Dupont Circle has a large selection of used books.

I fear that, otherwise, you are looking for Penguin Feather, a local chain that closed down two decades ago!
