I'm not going to cheer for any bubble popping. I like being employed. I hate it when the anti-government people come on here clicking their heels with glee hoping that people lose their jobs. Disgusting. Careful hon your fangs are showing. I'm going to just be motivated to strive for a better paying job.
Your employer is the problem. Federal government spending policies are the problem. You are not the problem but you might become collateral damage. We are spending way too much money on GUNS and not enough on BUTTER. Sober accountants and economists realize that excessive defense/homeland security spending during a time of economic stagnation is complete lunacy.
Contractors see the writing on the wall with hiring freezes, salary freezes and pre-emptive RIFS in the face of sequestration. Let's hope you find a more benevolent employer in the private sector economy.

Who cares about butter or guns? And I'm not going around killing people. I work in documentation. Contractors are part of the private sector. If you live in the DC area your employment is loosely tied to the government. Even the cashier at 7-11 has ties to the government because the customers that come into his store work for the government. You can't live in Silver Spring and be anti-government. It doesn't make sense.
I still say it's disgusting and immoral to go around hoping someone loses their job.
there is not going to be any bubble pop like the rest of the country has seen. there are too many powerful people here and political ties that will prevent that from happening. deals will be struck and compromises will be made and some people may draw the short straw, but no way will the DC area take a blow like a lot of the country did a few years ago
Thanks kln82 for your well written post. I'm looking to relocate to DC from So. Cal. Fed employee, currently in Long Beach paying $2,300 for a 3bd/2ba with pets. Is there room for me in Brentwood? Three adults, two pets. My sister I would like to tag along due to health issues so we may need a 4bd/3ba just to be safe. Somewhere along the Metro that could put at Pennsylvania Avenue in no time would be ideal. Was strongly considering Hill Crest but prefer not to buy at this time. been there and done that I'm afraid. (Smile)
Any help you can give me would be priceless. Thanks so much.

Hmm... well, most of the apt stock in Brentwood is the standard four unit buildings you find all over DC. Mainly 1-2br units. But, there are exceptions to that in a few cases, I think. And there's always the possibility of renting an entire house- actually if you're looking for 3-4 brs, this is most likely your best option. Though some might be out of your $2,300 price range, I don't think it's impossible to find something in this area for that. I don't know of any specifically that are looking for renters, but you could check Craigslist using either Brentwood or Rhode Island Ave Metro as search terms (just note that I'm referencing Brentwood, the DC neighborhood, not Brentwood, MD- both will come up in the search).
Also, though they are pricier because they are brand new and located right at the metro, the Rhode Island Row development has some 3br units, I believe.

Thanks KLN. I appreciate your taking the time in order to reply to my post. Brentwood area of DC it is.
