Considering a job transfer to the DC area and hoping someone can help us find a good location to start looking for rentals? I know we've been spoiled in North Carolina (real estate for pennies!), and I have no idea what the traffic situation is like.

What cities should I target if I want less than a 30 min drive or subway ride into the city? Ideally under $3k/month for > 2000 sq ft with a yard so my puppy can roam free.

Any other things I should take into consideration? I've heard that MD is better for taxes than VA, and north DC is better for traffic, but I'm flying blind, so I'd welcome any feedback.

It sounds like you are looking for a suburban type house, not a rowhouse like the kind that are all over DC the city itself? Google image search dc rowhouse if you don't know what I am talking about.

If the suburbs are what you want, not the city, then you should repost in the Northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs forums where you will get much more responses. You need to be less vague about where you will be commuting to. "The city" covers too large of an area.

Are rowhouses the 3-level townhouses? Those would work except that I never find any with yards Thanks for the heads-up, I'll ask there.

Commuting to Union Station, basically.

There are tons with yards, front and back. But the yards will be small compared to the typical suburban lot. But you have to remember that people who live in the city are usually very close walking distance to parks, so they don't need yards.
