What is the area between Conn Ave and Woodley metro stations like at night? Is it lit and busy?

Do you mean Cleveland Park and Woodley? It's pretty nice at night. The area near the Woodley station is lit and busy. As you go North to Cleveland Park, it stays pretty well lit but a bit more quiet since there isn't much around there except the Zoo. Once you get to Cleveland Park it's even more lit up and quite busy as well.

CP's one of my favorite neighborhoods in DC, except for the crummy parking. Great childhood memories from when we lived there for a few years.

Would you recommend metro to and from the zoo at night over driving?

Do whichever is more convenient for you based on where you are coming from. If you drive, don't bother parking in the zoo's expensive lot. There are almost always a bunch of spots on the street on Connecticut Ave.

Depends on where you Metro from. Here's a tip: get off at Cleveland Park when you're going to the zoo, because it's a downhill walk. Then when you're leaving, walk to the Woodley Park station since that's downhill from the zoo. They're both the same distance from the zoo.
