I am wondering if anybody can tell me what the typical dress of a congressional staffer is? Formal business attire or more casual?

Suit and tie when they are in session. Some offices have more relaxed dress codes on Mondays and Fridays or when they are in recess, but go with a suit and tie until you figure that out.

Hi Capitol Hill intern!

As a former intern on the Hill, I would agree the conservative dress style is a must.

For guys: basic black/brown/gray suit and dress shirt, nothing too guady as far as colors.
For ladies: Make sure skirt is appropriate length, no open toed shoes, wear stockings.

Good luck on your internship!

When in session it's a full suit with tie etc..

When not in session in the office I worked at it was pants and a shirt it could even just be a colored shirt and khaki pants. Some staff members would even wear jeans.

First day go in a suit and ask.

Thanks for the advice. First day happens to be a Friday, so I might look silly but conservative seems the best way to go.
