In Washington check out Frederick Douglas' house, the Vietnam War Memorial, the National Archives, the Smithsonian, the US Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Monument, Chinatown, Georgetown (Wisconsin Avenue), the White House for starters.

If you want to be in a very urban area, check out the areas around 14th & U. Washington has some of the loveliest housing stock in the entire country.
