Listen up. Far too many people who visit and live in this city don't really explore and get to see much of DC. Metrorail is mostly underground in the city so most people don't really get to see how the city looks. Heres from bus routes that cover much of DC and if riden from one end to another, you will get an authentic DC feel and you'll get to do DC like locals and long time residents do it.

First, the #70 bus. This bus route in my opinion is the realest bus route in DC and its among the oldest. It's famous for running long articulated buses (bendy buses) and travels from Silver Spring, MD down the backbone of DC (Georgia ave) through various neighborhoods, some ethic. On this bus you'll likely see all walks of life and yes there is a chance that'll you see an argument or maybe even a fight, but the bus is safe.

Second is the #32/#36 bus. This is the longest bus route in the entire city. It goes from Friendship Heights in Upper NW on the Chevy Chase, MD border to Southeast DC (#32, #36) and Temple Hills, MD in PG county (#36). Traveling down Wisconsin ave from Friendship Heights you'll venture through much of Upper NW including Tenlytown, McLean Gardens, National Cathedral, Glover Park, Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Downtown, Capitol Hill, Eastern Market, Southeast DC (Ward 8), before reaching one of the terminals at either Southern ave station (#32) or Narlor road station (#36). This is a very long route so be sure to bring something to drink. Also these routes do go though the hood east of Anacostia river.

Next is the #X2. This is a DC classic in its own right. Like the #70, this line also uses articulated buses and will give you that authentic DC feel. The #X2 travels from Lafayette Square near the White House through downtown and Chinatown then across Hopscotch bridge near Union station and travels on H street NE by way of the Atla District and 8th and H before coming to Starburst plaza and veering onto Benning road NE will ultimately take you out to Minnesota ave out in far Northeast DC. This route does go though rough parts of town east of Starburst plaza however I wouldn't say its unsafe exactly however you can't be stupid.

Routes #E2, #A2/A6/A8, #V7, #W4, #52/53/54, and #90/92 are also good for viewing DC as well. I'l get into detail about those later.

Food or drink isn't permitted on the bus. I suppose a person could get off and drink before getting on again though.

We recently sold our condo at 11th and H, NE to move to a house near RFK. You could hardly find a more diverse route. It gets dicey on there at times, and there is often the unmistakable olfactory cocktail of urine and b.o., but you get everything from the VeryImportantPeople near the White House, to the hipsters of H Street, to the predominantly African-American neighborhoods of eastern DC.

For a good combination of city scenes and visuals on the outside + local color on the inside, I like the 14th Street buses (52-54, the Circulator).

The routes I just mentioned never leave DC except at the end of the line (70, 32/36). All of these lines at a metro station so you'll have no problem getting back in the heart of the city.

Yep all bus routes with the exception of the 15M and from Fairfax connector routes in Fairfax co, but that'll change once the silver line opens.
